Ewha Selected by Seoul to Develop Integrated Care Management for Super-Aged Society
Ewha Womans University has been selected for the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Seoul ANCHOR 10 Challenge initiative to develop a model for integrated care management through the convergence of healthcare, artificial intelligence (AI), and robotics in response to the needs of a super-aged society. As part of this large-scale research and development initiative that helps universities foster future industries and address urban challenges, Ewha will carry out the Arise Ewha, Prime-Seoul project for up to nine years with KRW 8 billion in funding from Seoul, along with matching funds from the university.
The project brings together 10 faculty members from the fields of medicine, AI, robotics, and architecture. The medical research track, led by the College of Medicine, will analyze complex health risks and factors among older adults, including dementia, cerebrovascular disease, frailty, cognitive function, and oral health and nutrition, and establish a framework for clinical intervention. The AI-robotics research track, led by the College of Engineering, will develop a system that uses multimodal sensing, AI-powered digital twins, smart home technologies, and robotics to detect and respond to risks in living environments in real time.
The research team plans to develop an integrated hospital–home–community care platform that detects early warning signs among older adults, including reduced outings, missed medication, suspected falls, and cognitive decline, and links these signs to appropriate preventive care, medical services, and emergency response.
Operating out of the core sites of Sinchon Campus, Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital, and Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital, the university will collaborate with dementia care centers, public health centers, and care institutions in Seodaemun-gu, Yangcheon-gu, and Gangseo-gu to demonstrate research outcomes while also working with the Seoul Business Agency and industry partners to commercialize these technologies.
The project seeks to develop a standard model for smart care for a super-aged society based on Ewha’s interdisciplinary research capabilities in healthcare, AI, and robotics while laying the foundation for an integrated health and safety management system that can be expanded beyond Seoul to other parts of Korea and abroad.
