Overview
The College of Natural Sciences was established in 1982 when the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences was divided into two colleges, the College of Natural Sciences and the College of Liberal Arts. The core departments that made up the College of Natural Sciences were established 1951, and they have been actively contributing to the education and research of basic and applied sciences for the past 60 years.
The College of Natural Sciences started with the Departments of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Computer Science. The Department of Statistics was added to the College in 1988. In order to meet the growing technological demands of industries, the Department of Environmental Science & Engineering was added to the College in 1993 and the Department of Architecture and the Department of Information Electronics Engineering in 1994. In 1996, these three departments and the Department of Computer Science & Engineering merged as the College of Engineering. The College of Natural Sciences currently includes mathematics, statistics, physics, chemistry and biological sciences majors.
The main goal of the College of Natural Sciences is to develop and produce excellent female leaders in the fields of science and technology. The college is mainly located in the Science Buildings with state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and computer systems. Our Research Institute for Basic Sciences with its multipurpose laboratories provides the highest quality educational experience for students.
Today's rapidly changing technological society requires innovative application of scientific creativity that can only be developed from the basis of an inter-disciplinary knowledge of science and technology. The broad curricula of the College of Natural Sciences offer such essential education and training. From 1996, the College of Natural Sciences has provided a double major program to give undergraduate students the freedom and opportunity to choose a curriculum that interests them and relates to their future graduate studies.
Many of the graduates are working in major universities and research centers throughout the country. Many more students are applying their scientific knowledge and skills in diverse areas such as educational, governmental, and banking institutions as well as commercial industries. The opportunity for graduates to work in broader areas of industry and society is expected to grow even more as today's technological society demands graduates with a special working knowledge of science and technology.
