Environmental Science and Engineering Undergrads Publish in Leading Journals


Five undergraduate students from the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering in the College of Engineering at Ewha Womans University have each served as first author on a research paper in leading SCI(E)-indexed international journals in their fields, underscoring both the students’ own research capabilities and the achievements of Ewha’s research-oriented education program.

Undergraduate research interns Minjung Kim and Miso Kim (Class of 2023), along with Jin Choi, Sujeong Baek, and Hyunjin Shin (Class of 2024), from the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering’s Laboratory of Contaminants of Emerging Concern for Water Environment researched next-generation water treatment and the removal of emerging contaminants under the supervision of Distinguished Professor Yoon Yeomin. The students’ review papers analyze technologies employing MXene-based nanomaterials and membrane systems to remove heavy metals, inorganic ions, pharmaceutical residues, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and technologies employing microplastics and ultrasound-based oxidation systems to degrade bisphenol A. The papers have been published or accepted for publication in leading academic journals, including Journal of Hazardous Materials, Process Safety and Environmental Protection, Ultrasonics Sonochemistry, Separation and Purification Technology, and Environmental Research.


These studies are significant in that they evaluate the effects of water quality on the performance of nanomaterial-based adsorbents and membrane technologies in actual drinking water and wastewater treatment environments. They also analyze the reusability of nanomaterials, the ecological toxicity of persistent intermediates, and strategies for large-scale implementation, providing insights for the practical application and commercialization of next-generation water treatment technologies.


This achievement demonstrates that the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering is cultivating the talent needed to solve future environmental problems through a research-oriented educational curriculum that provides undergraduate students with opportunities to participate in cutting-edge research, write papers, and present at academic conferences. The Laboratory of Contaminants of Emerging Concern for Water Environment, where the research was conducted, serves as a hub for fostering global specialists in the water environment while shepherding major national research initiatives including the Brain Pool+ Program and the Basic Research Laboratory Program.
