Seo Yeong Park, Jiwu Kim, Jiho Kim Swept the 51st JoongAng Fashion Design Contest

Senior students in the Fashion Design Department won the Grand Prize, Top Excellence Prize, and Silver Prize at the JoongAng Fashion Design Contest, a prestigious contest that bridges budding designers and the fashion industry.
The winners of the 51st JoongAng Fashion Design Contest
The JoongAng Fashion Design Contest, created by Woman JoongAng, a monthly magazine, in 1970, marked its 51st anniversary this year as a contest for spotlighting talented fashion designers and elevating the level of the fashion industry in Korea. The group fashion show format introduced by the contest in the 1980s has become a norm in the industry. The contest now works as a bridge between budding designers and the fashion industry, promoting the development of the fashion industry at home and abroad.
The applicants are evaluated first by their flat sketches, followed by the garments made from those sketches, and the fashion show in the final stage. The final stage of the 51st Joongang Fashion Design Contest took place in the Seoul Fashion Creative Studio in the DDP Fashion Mall on January 12th, Friday.

Seo Yeong Park won the Grand Prize (Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Award) for her design titled A Lonely Silence, which depicts every silent and strong thing free from the hierarchy of adaptation. “It feels so rewarding to receive the prize. It feels like a graduation gift and New Year’s gift for me,” said Seo Yeong Park. “I will take this prize as a motivation to explore and study various fields, as well as fashion, to become a more creative fashion designer.”
Jiwu Kim won the Top Excellence Prize (Mayor of Seoul Award) for her design, FP Harmony, about an integrative fashion that harmonizes the unknown extragalactic world to the humans, undefinable worlds, the future, and the past. “Receiving the Top Excellence Prize for the work on my favorite holographic texture and color feels so happy and rewarding,” said Jiwu Kim, expressing gratitude for her family, friends, and professors in the Fashion Design Department.
Jiho Kim won the Silver Prize for her design, BLACK CARP, FIRST DREAM, inspired by her conception dream. “What I have learned from Ewha for the past four years helped a lot in expressing my intention in the medium of fashion. It was a great experience for me.” Jiho Kim said, expressing her happiness about receiving a prize in the first fashion contest of her life.
The designs by three winners are all graduation project works exhibited at the 2023 PREMIER EWHA FASHION COLLECTION. The students’ feats at the contest once again demonstrated the educational excellence and outstanding capacities of students in the Fashion Design Department at Ewha Womans University.
