Suyeon Kim, an architecture major, and Jieun Park and Sumin Lee, English education majors, won the Excellence Prize at the Smart City Contest of the 1st World Health City Forum in Songdo Convensia from November 20th to 22nd.

The forum was co-hosted by Incheon Metropolitan City, the Ministry of Health and Welfare of South Korea, Seoul National University, Ewha Womans University, and Yonsei University and attended by 140 speakers from 20 countries. The participants discussed standards for smart health cities of a safe post-pandemic society, mega-risks against humans – aging society, climate change, ecosystem destruction – and improvement of human health and well-being.

Suyeon Kim (Adviser: Ji Hyun Park), majoring in Architecture, presented research on housing for the elderly living alone under the theme of optimizing eco-friendly building design. “I intended to make sustainable architecture and city design easier. Designers will have a wide range of early-phase options for housing designs that respects environment and health, allowing them to create flexible and aesthetic designs.” Kim said.

The team of Jieun Park and Sumin Lee (Adviser: Kevin Buchanan) proposed a creative idea of a flooding warning system for the smart health city. “The proposed flooding warning system provides an intuitive interface, which is a re-interpretation of cheugugi of the Joseon Dynasty and nilometer of Egypt,” said Park and Lee, explaining that the technology “aims to be user-friendly and human-centric.”

“We are so happy to receive the award for our curiosity-driven project. It was such a fun and meaningful experience for us, and we wish to build a city of coexistence with new ideas in the future.” The students said.
