Professor Emeritus Young Hee Choi Received the Parliamentarian Award from the Parliamentarian’s Society

Professor Emeritus Young Hee Choi, a former MP and president of the Korean Nurses Association, received the Parliamentarian Award from the Parliamentarian’s Society of the Republic of Korea (the Parliamentarian’s Society). 


<The third Awarding Ceremony of the Parliamentarian Award> was a part of the 55th Anniversary Meeting of the Parliamentarian’s Society of the Republic of Korea, which took place at Kensington Hotel in Yeouido, Seoul, on November 9th. Professor Emeritus Choi is the first female MP to receive this award. The Parliamentarian’s Society is a bipartisan group of former MPs striving to put their experiences and wisdom to good use in matters of the state. The group is an incorporated association of the National Assembly.


When elected as a member of the 16th National Assembly, Professor Emeritus Young Hee Choi strived to enhance national health and the status of women in the Commission of Health and Welfare, Commission of Education, and Commission of Women. She played a significant role in including provisions about female representation quota in party constitutions and platforms, endeavored to abolish the Hoju System, and received an award for her outstanding work as an MP. During her presidency at the Korean Nurses Association, Professor Emeritus Choi dedicated herself to expanding the role of nurses and improving the professional status of nurses. She led the launching of the Korea-China Nursing Forum and the East Asian Forum of Nursing Scholars to promote international exchanges and cooperation among nurses. As a professor, she strived to train talented nurses during her thirty-six years at the College of Nursing at Ewha Womans University, dedicating herself to developing Korean-culture-specific nursing theories and qualitative research on nursing. She also worked as a chairperson of the Korean National Council of Women, a steering committee member at the South Korean NGO Forum for the World Conference on Women, and co-leader of the Women’s Alliance for Introducing Gender Quota, in an effort to expand women’s participation in politics and social movement and secure women’s fundamental   rights and right to health.
