Youjin Bae and Jeongeun Kim Won the Best Prize for Their Paper on Educationally Marginalized Children and Teenagers

Dr. Youjin Bae, who studied psychology and clinical developmental psychology, and Ph.D. student Jeongeun Kim (Adviser: Sujin Yang) won the Best Prize in the 2023 Longitudinal Research Paper Competition on Educationally Marginalized Children and Teenagers. The competition was organized and hosted by the Samsung Dream Scholarship Foundation.
Founded in 2006, Samsung Dream Scholarship Foundation (SDSF) has launched various scholarship projects – such as Mentoring Scholarship Program, Leader Creation Scholarship Program, Educational Support Program, and Global Scholarship program – for practical extension of educational opportunities to students from underprivileged backgrounds. The SDSF has monitored the growth and changes of scholarship recipients through regular surveys via its assessment tool for tracking the current state of scholarship projects and analyzing the performance of the projects. In addition, the SDSF discloses its data publicly and hosts the paper competition based on such data so that academic researchers and policymakers can use it as raw material for academic research and creating policies for supporting children and teenagers.
In their paper Analysis on Effectiveness of Scholarship Programs for Underprivileged College Students: Latent Growth Model of Self-leadership and Individual Social Responsibility, Youjin Bae (1st author) at AGE (A Growing Experience) Lab of Psychology Department and Jeongeun Kim (co-author) found out that scholarship programs are not just about financial aid for continuing education but creating a virtuous cycle that individuals’ psychological capacity and individual social responsibility can help each other grow.
“I hope analyzing the effectiveness of the virtuous cycle made by scholarship programs for underprivileged college students can help make and develop policies to support educationally marginalized students,” said Jeongeun Kim.
