A Team of Undergraduate Students Won the Gold Prize at the 3rd Petrochemicals Olympiad by LG Chem

A team of undergraduate students at Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Major in ELTEC College of Engineering won the Gold Prize in the Sustainability section from the 3rd LG Chem - Korean Institute of Chemical Engineers Petrochemicals Olympiad.
Around 365 teams of college students majoring in chemical engineering applied for this month-long olympiad. The seven teams won prizes for their ideas on sustainability, such as enhancing productivity and using biofuel, following fierce competition. The students from Ewha Womans University topped the sustainability section (Gold Prize) and showed how wonderfully Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Major at Ewha trains the students. The winners of gold, silver, and bronze prizes receive a benefit of a passing guarantee at the résumé screening of LG Chemical, in addition to 3M, 2M, and 1M won of prize money per capita respectively.
“We imitated the process with a simulation program to compare and analyze the existing manufacturing plants using petrochemical ethylene and bio-ethylene plants, and proposed an idea to improve sustainable bio-ethylene technically and economically,” said Team Gongsil-gongsil (Juyeon Lee, Chaeran Mun, Hyoju Jeon), the Gold-Prize winner. “Studying research papers on the basis of what we learned from manufacturing design classes and solutions from continuous discussion with teammates made all these possible. We want to express our gratitude to Professors Jonggeol Na and Woo-Jae Kim for helping us throughout the process of preparing for this olympiad,” they added.
Under the calling for training outstanding female engineers and improving science and technology, Ewha Womans University founded the first all-female engineering college in 1996. Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Major was established in 2015 with an aim to train the best female engineers who lead in chemical and material fields. Chemical Engineering and Materials Science is a field of study that involves both basic and applied research. This interdisciplinary field of study can easily be connected with other STEM majors – such as environmental engineering, computer engineering, and electronic engineering – and is expected to play a significant role in leading the development of chemical engineering in the age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and green technologies.
