Hee Ju Kang, a postdoctoral research fellow working under the Social Welfare Department’s Ewha Frontier 10-10 project, won the Excellent Research Poster Prize at the 2023 fall conference of the Korean Association of Child Studies with her research paper titled Content Analysis of Mukbang. The prize was awarded to five teams after a thorough evaluation, following the first longlisting of thirty-eight teams.

Dr. Kang figured out the current state of child abuse in 314 mukbang videos on seven channels, extending the concept of in-person child abuse to the digital environment. Finding out that 66.2% of the analyzed videos contained child abuse content, including emotional abuse and neglect that are difficult to spot as abuse, she proposed to provide education to prevent child abuse, secure professionals for monitoring child abuse, and include protection of children in the digital environment in laws and regulations. She also developed and patented YouTube Child Abuse Detection Algorithm in Korea.

“I am a researcher from ITI (Innovation, Technology, Inclusion) Social Welfare Talent Training Institute, and I had the privilege of receiving an interdisciplinary and creative education that integrates technology into existing social work practices,” said Hee Ju Kang in her acceptance speech. “I will be a researcher who makes a significant contribution in creating a system for protecting children in the digital environment by continuing research that spots child abuse in the digital environments swiftly and accurately,” she added.
