The opening ceremony for the training program for Korean language teachers in Thai primary and lower-secondary schools took place on July 9th (Sun) at Ewha Womans University. Brenden Howe, the Dean of the Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS), delivered opening remarks, followed by congratulatory remarks by the President of the Korean Education Center in Thailand (KEC), Wonseok Choi, and the Chairman of King Sejong Institute Foundation, Haiyoung Lee. The event was attended by the Vice President of the KEC, Gwangjung Kim, Professor Sun Hee Park at Ewha Womans University, and twenty-nine current and prospective Korean teachers from Thailand.

Thailand is one of the countries with high demand for Korean language education. As of 2022, around 45,000 students from 181 schools were learning Korean. The Korean language was also selected as a subject for the Professional and Aptitude Test (PAT), an university entrance exam in Thailand. This raised the demand for stronger capacity and honed expertise of Korean language teachers, and the training program for Korean language teachers in Thai primary and lower-secondary schools has been provided for two consecutive years to meet such demand. The program includes a certificate program for training Korean teachers in Thai universities and a training visit to Korea for outstanding participants.

This year, twenty-nine current and prospective Korean teachers chosen as outstanding participants after completing the training program in 2022 and 2023 will visit Korea to participate in an eight-day training program from July 9th to 16th. They will engage in various activities, such as special lectures on Korean teaching methods and Korean culture, education practicum, and cultural experiences.

“I am so glad to provide this program for two years in a row, and I hope this program can be a meaningful opportunity for current and prospective Korean teachers from Thailand to learn practical knowledge on Korean language education and experience Korean culture,” said Professor Sun Hee Park at the Department of Korean Studies in the GSIS, who is in charge of this program. “I hope everyone stays passionate about Korean language education and contributes to the development of Korean language education in Thailand with tireless efforts,” she added.
