Urochordata Resource Obtained by Natural History Museum: Pegea Confoederata

When urochordata become adults, they are divided into those that stick to and live in hard places such ascidians and warty sea squirts, and those that float in the sea throughout their lives such as thalia, salpa, and doliolus. They attract attention as research and development continues to be carried out not only as food but also as source materials including anti-cancer drugs, antiviral drugs, immunosuppressants and biofuels.

Along with the designation as the conservation agency, Marine Urochordata Resources Registration and Preservation Agency project is also expected to actively carry out the ‘sample collection-preservation-research’ which is a major function of the university museum, as it has been selected consecutively since 2019. Natural History Museum systematically collects, preserves, designates and excavates urochordata with the support of KIMST (Korea Institute of Marine and Science & Technology Promotion) and Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. In addition, the museum obtains and manages physical samples and non-physical resources (information of species, photos, video clips). It plans to support rental of the resources to be used for education, exhibition, application and development research, and to further operate the Sea Dining Table, a marine biodiversity educational program developed in 2019.

Education Science Atelier’s Alpha Version Package

On top of that, Natural History Museum is becoming more and more distinguished, being selected for various education and research projects in 2020 and receiving support.

It was selected for the development of artistic experience-based, creative science convergence education contents among various projects in the Scientific Exhibitions Culture Service Enhance Project supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT and National Research Foundation of Korea. The museum will continue carrying out the second stage of the project (2020-2021), following the first stage (2018-2019). As a result, educational contents at the Natural History Museum can be expanded by converging and diversifying with social issues, art experiences, and technology. In 2020, it is expected to verify the alpha version of the ‘Science Atelier’, a theme-specific educational contents package (8 programs and 12 toolkits) developed in the first stage of the project, in science museums and hands-on exhibitions nationwide. It plans to develop a new beta version of educational toolkit that applies technologies such as VR and AR.

It was also selected for the 2020 Private and Private University Museum Professional Personnel Support Project supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Museum Association. The museum will receive support with museum education professionals and enhance the quality of museum education work.
