Ewha Womans University cohosted a special lecture at Welch-Ryang Auditorium on July 15 by the architect Tadao Ando with Museum SAN (Space Art Nature), a culture and art complex operated by the Hansol Cultural Foundation.

Tadao Ando, who worked in construction before teaching himself architecture, became an iconic figure in the global field by establishing his own creative architectural vision. Some of his definitive works include the Church of the Light, Rokko Housing I, II, and III, Honpukuji Temple (the Water Temple), and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. He is well-known in Korea for works such as Museum SAN in Wonju, Gangwon-do Province and LG Art Center Seoul in Magok, western Seoul.

At the event themed “We Make Our Own Possibilities,” Ando began his lecture with a greeting, saying “I am pleased to give a lecture at Ewha Womans University thanks to my personal relationships with the architect Dominique Perrault who designed the Ewha Campus Complex (ECC) and President of Ewha Eun Mee Kim.” He then introduced some of his projects, such as his first commission Sumiyoshi House (1969), Chichu Art Museum on the island of Naoshima, and Museum SAN in Wonju, as well as children’s library projects carried out in Japan, Bangladesh, and other countries. The architectural master’s voice that humorously delivered his life wisdom gained while conducting global projects captivated the audience filling the 3,000 seats.

A student representative majoring in Architecture related her impressions on the event, saying, “I am proud that a lecture by an architect whom I have always respected and referred to was held at my school. It was a valuable opportunity for students to be able to develop a dream about the future while going to school.” Regarding the lecture, she added, “It was good to hear a story that you cannot find in a general exhibition, something beyond just a floor plan. I was motivated by the fact that he still does his best to work toward his goals even when he has become a global master in architecture.”
