President Eun Mee Kim remarked, “Dr. Jane Goodall has devoted her entire life to the exploration of science and the preservation of environments. In particular, she has played a leading role as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated science field. As such, we decided to award this honorary doctoral degree in science to her.” She went on to add, “Dr. Jane Goodall’s tireless pursuit of knowledge and ceaseless efforts towards a sustainable world are connected to Ewha’s vision.”

“I am pleased to be awarded this degree at Ewha Womans University, the first university for women in Korea and also a prestigious one,” said Dr. Goodall in her acceptance speech. “It is all the more meaningful for me to receive this honorary doctoral degree in science on the Ewha campus with its beautiful natural features where a range of education and studies are taking place on behalf of the global environment, including the Research Institute of EcoScience.” She also emphasized, “Since each day of our lives affects this planet and also our society, an individual’s environmental footprint is really important. Therefore, it is significant for more young people to learn how to preserve and love the environment to address climate change and the loss of biodiversity.”

Dr. Goodall has long maintained a special relationship with Ewha. She visited the school in 2004 and 2007 and gave lectures to students. As an Ewha Academy for Advanced Studies (EAAS) Distinguished Professor in 2012 and an invited speaker for the 14th Kim Okgill Memorial Lecture in 2014, she offered public lectures at Welch-Ryang Auditorium on the theme of the value of life. Continuing this relationship, she was awarded Ewha’s 112th honorary doctoral degree to deepen her connection with Ewha, which is leading research in the field of eco-science.

Since 1952, Ewha has conferred honorary doctoral degrees on domestic and international figures who reflect Ewha’s ideals for education, including the improvement of human rights through increasing women’s empowerment and the reinforcement of women’s capacity. Among those who have received such degrees are former President of Finland Tarja Halonen (2002), former President of Ireland Mary McAleese (2005), former President of Chile Michelle Bachelet (2009), former Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel (2010), former Secretary-general of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon (2015), former President of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaid (2018), and CEO of Solvay Ilham Kadri (2022).
