Ewha’s Education and Learning Environment Renewed by Smart Learning Spaces
Spurring the establishment of an innovative education platform in response to digital transformation
Building active and flexible learning spaces and improving the safety and convenience of the library infrastructure
Ewha is spurring the establishment of an innovative education platform in response to digital transformation, including the development of cutting-edge curricula and the establishment of a system for supporting convergent hybrid teaching and learning. The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning established “THE BEST,” the Ewha-specific education model, and is conducting a trial operation of 230 new subjects in the first semester of the 2022 academic year. In addition, it is continuously promoting projects to improve the educational environment including the establishment of active learning classrooms that effectively support online and offline convergent classes, in addition to learner-centered flexible spaces.
First, the Active Learning Classroom (ALC) is a changeable unit where a wide range of learning experiences and knowledge construction driven by learners come true. In particular, the Center focused on the effective convergence of online and offline learning, convergence of conceptual and application learning and more to support THE BEST classes. This semester, three ALC lecture rooms and seven changeable lecture rooms have opened, in addition to the upgrading of two existing ALC lecture rooms, thereby creating an even smarter learning environment.
Intended to be used in various ways according to learners’ goals and needs, flexible learning spaces were newly opened this semester in three buildings including Ewha-Shinsegae Building, Human Ecology Building (Morris Hall) and Education Building B. So far, the demand for flexible learning spaces has been continuously on the rise. In particular, as contact and non-contact classes have been selectively conducted in the recent few years due to the continued pandemic, the need for spaces to participate in non-contact classes on campus has been raised continuously. Reflecting this demand, the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning has newly established flexible learning spaces each year since 2019. Considering that the teaching and learning paradigm is shifting to a learner-centered approach, the Center plans to continue expanding the establishment of active learning classrooms in the future based on a demand survey for each college and the potential decision to expand convergence classes.
In addition, the Office of Information and Communications refurbished the Open Computer Lab on the second basement floor of the ECC and reorganized it to be available as an online learning space. The University Library expanded and improved complex spaces for research and learning in the stacks and underwent refurbishment as a space equipped with an advanced, future-oriented educational environment. First, it furnished its reading rooms with various seats, such as standalone carrels, smart hubs and smart lounge sofas, which ensure sufficient distance between users and allow individual study and media use. It also installed cubicles in the viewing areas and large open tables around the bookstacks to create spaces for studying and learning as well as collaborative work and communication without being disturbed by others. In addition, by arranging various types of seats for reading around the bookstacks, it has established an environment that allows for the combined use of online and offline data and easy information searches. The Library has continuously surveyed user satisfaction and further requirements for its spaces and plans to keep collecting feedback from different users and reflect such opinions in providing better services and making further improvements to the spaces.
