Sponsorships from Alumnae, Faculty Members, and Businesses Continue to Enhance Research and Educational Capabilities of College of Medicine

With the steady dedication of sponsorships from alumnae, faculty members, and businesses, the College of Medicine is picking up its pace in terms of enhancing its research and educational capabilities and expanding collaboration among bio-health and pharmaceutical companies located at M-Valley Complex in Magok district, Ewha University-Industry Collaboration Foundation, and Ewha Womans University hospitals. Successive donations from sponsors are expected to serve as a critical foundation for reinforcing Ewha’s status as a research-oriented university, which constitutes an important segment of Ewha’s development plan, “Ewha Vision 2030+.”

On Tuesday, November 30, alumnae Oh Hye-sook (graduating class of 1978, Department of Medicine) and Pi Sang-soon (graduating class of 1984, Department of Medicine) each donated 100 million KRW to their alma mater’s College of Medicine to foster specialists who will lead advanced medical science research and medical studies in the era of artificial intelligence. The two alumnae, who served Ewha’s spirit of serving and sharing through their medical practice and donations, have also greatly contributed to Ewha’s growth through their continued donations.

In addition, alumna Jeong Mi-ra (graduating class of 1983, Department of Medicine) donated 100 million KRW in October to nurture the next generation of medical students, and the Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital Residents’ Council donated 44 million KRW in November to help develop the College of Medicine and foster junior medical doctors.

Meanwhile, Ewha held a donation ceremony with the Seoul Clinical Laboratories (SCL) on Friday, December 17 to sign an agreement for joint research and research facilitation. The SCL, which was established as Korea’s first specialized testing institution and has solidified its status as a world-class testing institution, agreed to conduct joint research projects with Ewha to promote public health and work together to establish a research collaboration system to facilitate enhanced exchanges such as personnel exchanges and joint academic seminars. The agreement is expected to contribute not only to enhancing joint research between universities and research institutes, but also to facilitating research in the field of environmental health, which is gaining importance worldwide.

In addition, thanks to the SCL’s decision to sponsor the Ewha Medical Research Fund, which was launched in October, the fund has garnered donation pledges exceeding 650 million KRW in total within two months. Beginning with a donation of 100 million KRW by Dean Ha Eun-hee of the College of Medicine, 500 million KRW has been raised by businesses including the Seegene Medical Foundation and the Cardiovascular Research Center, and 150 million KRW by the College of Medicine faculty members, further expanding the fund designed to reinforce research in cutting-edge medicine and medical science. The fund will serve as a foundation for the College of Medicine to serve as a pillar of the Ewha Leading-Edge Medi·Healthcare Cluster (ELEC) along with the Sinchon Campus, Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital and Seoul Hospital, and facilitate research exchanges regarding convergence intermediary research and individually-customized medicine as required by the times.

The series of donations made to the College of Medicine, which is continuing the tradition of Po Goo Nyo Goan, Korea’s first women-only hospital established in 1887, are expected to serve as the basis for nurturing medical specialists who will lead the future AI era and conduct in-depth research on cutting-edge medical science. President Kim Eun Mee emphasized, “Educating women and supporting health and medical care for women represent Ewha’s longtime calling, and the role of the College of Medicine is critical for Ewha’s leap forward as a top-tier competitive university,” and added, “Ewha will endeavor to identify and support leading and promising fields for its advancement as a research-oriented university, and support outstanding students so that they can concentrate on studying without distractions.”
