Hosting the “2021 HOKMA Day” Online

The HOKMA College of General Education hosted the “2021 HOKMA Day” on December 2 (Thu.).

The HOKMA College of General Education has been hosting “HOKMA Day” for affiliated students who are about to join a department/major after a year-long career exploration period. This year’s event, livestreamed through Zoom, was participated by senior students who entered Ewha through the HOKMA College, along with 140 students from the incoming class of 2021.

The event was held under the theme of “For Those Who Are Leaving HOKMA” and began with opening remarks delivered by Dean Sung-Kyung Yoo and Associate Dean Baehyun Min of the HOKMA College and advisor faculties, who sent greetings to students in the incoming class of 2021.

The second part of the event consisted of a talk show featuring senior students of the HOKMA College. The student talk show hosts presented various events including a balance game, a quiz to name campus locations, and a Q&A session titled “Show Us HOKMA” in which senior students at the HOKMA College provided information on the college based on frequently-asked questions. Senior students ensured that the event provided a pleasant venue for communication, by encouraging active participation from junior students by using the hand-raising function on Zoom, a fun quiz, and a contest to pick out the most enthusiastic participant. The event then progressed to a networking event for each college by using the breakout rooms function on Zoom, followed by a prize drawing for participants.

Kim So-yeon (HOKMA College of General Education, incoming class of 2021), who chose to major in Life Science, expressed her impressions of the event, saying “I haven’t had many opportunities to meet my classmates and senior students due to COVID-19, so it was nice to get the chance to meet them through this Zoom event.” She also gave some advice for new students who will enter the HOKMA College in March this year, adding “I hope you will all actively take part in in-person events when they return, and enjoy your college life to the fullest during the year you’ll spend at the HOKMA College while attending various classes.”

Ewha became the first among major universities to implement the Integrated Selection System for each field in 2018. The selected candidates of the Integrated Selection System can freely explore majors that they are interested in, by attending classes and programs in various majors as an affiliated student of the HOKMA College over a period of a year before finally selecting their major from seven available colleges. In addition, the system provides benefits such as four-year full tuition scholarships given to the top 50 percent of successful candidates from the initial admissions process, eligibility to enter the new E-house dormitory, and freedom to choose a major without limitations on selecting between arts and sciences or the major quota upon advancing to their sophomore year. The HOKMA College of General Education also provides various forms of support for optimized career planning by holding various events such as the career exploration program “HOKMA Students Mind Tour,” “HOKMA Forum,” “HOKMA DAY,” “Major Fair,” and “Presentation on Majors,” and encourages students to grow into talented individuals with creative convergence skills.
