2021 Ewha Family Christmas Service and Ewha’s Houses of Christmas Lighting Ceremony Held

The 2021 Ewha Family Christmas Service was held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, December 2, co-hosted by the Chaplain’s Office and the Ewha Alumnae Association. Ewha students, current and retired faculty members and staff, and alumnae gathered together to honor and celebrate the meaning of Christmas in advance at the Ewha Family Christmas Service, which has been held on the first Thursday of December every year since 1996. This year, the service was held online and livestreamed on the Alumnae Association’s YouTube account (https://youtu.be/aQxhLVLajDQ?t=2253) for contact-free participation due to the risk of spreading COVID-19.

The service opened with the hymn “Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus,” a reading of the “Ewha Christmas Prayer,” and a scripture reading (Matthew 2:1-3, 9-11). Under the title of “A Certain Invitation,” Rev. Ahn Sun-hee preached, “I pray for a Christmas filled with peace for all of you in the Ewha family, as we gather to answer the invitation from baby Jesus, the king of peace who erases boundaries and tears down barriers.”

The service was followed by a special performance titled “Carol Festival” by students majoring in Korean Music and a special fundraising event for Ewha alumnae missionaries. The offering collected from the Ewha Family Christmas Service has traditionally been used to fund Ewha alumnae missionaries on mission trips all over the world. This year, the service showed a video presenting the activities of Ewha alumnae missionaries who are overseas practicing Christian love, sharing and serving as the founding spirit of Ewha, followed by a prayer by Seong Hye-ok, the missionary outreach manager of the Alumnae Association. The offering collected this year will be used for delivering Christmas gifts to alumnae missionaries and sharing joy.

President Eun Mee Kim also greeted the Ewha family by remarking, “I hope that you will all enjoy peace as we wait for the light and holy hour that will soon come to us and think of our Lord Jesus, who came to the lowest places in our time to bring gospel and peace to the world.” The service finished with a performance titled “Sleighing” (conductor: Professor Park Shin-hwa) by the College of Music Choir and the hymn “Oh Little Town of Bethlehem” by the Staff Choir.

Meanwhile, the Chaplain’s Office installed the “Ewha’s Houses of Christmas—Nativity Scene” in various locations on campus and held lighting ceremonies to share the love and comfort of baby Jesus. Ewha’s Houses of Christmas are on-campus installations designed to celebrate the birth of baby Jesus, who came as light into a dark world, and to share the light of warm love with visitors at Ewha. Since the first installation at the Ewha Campus Complex in 2018, they have spread to various locations and lit up the campus, such as the ELTEC College of Engineering, the College of Medicine Magok Campus, and especially Ewha’s dormitories this year.

The Ewha’s Houses of Christmas lighting ceremonies were held respectively at the Ewha Campus Complex Square and outside the Engineering Building on Tuesday, November 30, in front of the E-House on Thursday, December 2, and at the College of Medicine Magok Campus on Wednesday, December 8.
