Alumna Kim Jun-hee Donates 5.18 Billion KRW for Ewha’s Growth

Ewha alumna Kim Jun-hee (graduating class of 1960, Department of English Language and Literature) donated 5.18 billion KRW for Ewha’s continued growth. Kim made the large-scale donation without hesitation to fulfill her longtime resolution of contributing to society by giving her best to her chosen field and returning what she was given back to society.

Ewha held a donation agreement ceremony on Monday, May 17 to express its gratitude to alumna Kim Jun-hee for making such a meaningful decision for the development of her alma mater. As soon as all procedures concerning the donation are completed, Ewha plans to create the “Kim Jun-hee Development Fund” (tentatively named) and use it for the school’s development.

Born in North Korea, Kim defected to South Korea during the retreat of January 4, 1951 during the Korean War and entered Ewha amidst the tumultuous events of the times. Kim expressed her immense gratitude for the opportunity to study at Ewha and enjoy many benefits, support and higher education, which were not available to women who were socially underprivileged at a time when higher education was exclusively enjoyed by men.

Kim expressed, “After graduating Ewha, I realized that Ewha’s name served as a powerful guarantor while I made my way through society. This donation is a token of my appreciation for the numerous benefits that I enjoyed as an Ewha graduate.” Wishing for Ewha’s development, she also remarked, “I feel proud and rewarded to be able to contribute to the development of Ewha. I hope that many more will participate in and support efforts to further develop Ewha.”

In return, President Kim Eun Mee thanked her by saying, “We appreciate Ms. Kim’s decision, which will greatly support Ewha’s development, and we will endeavor to uphold her profound will and use the donation as she intended.” She also expressed her resolution by commenting, “Based on the donation from our alumna Kim Jun-hee, we hope that Ewha will stand tall as a world-class university in marking its 135th anniversary and reinvent itself as new Ewha that leads our time and society, ultimately carrying on the glory of our predecessors.”

Ewha has established “Ewha Vision 2030+,” a development plan aimed at becoming a world-class university in response to trends in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and furthermore leading the times and society. Ewha will implement the “Frontier 10–10 Project” to intensively cultivate 10 leading research fields and 10 future-oriented challenging fields with international competitiveness, and establish Korea’s first College of Artificial Intelligence as part of an educational innovation platform designed to build initiative in response to digital transformation, as well as the Ewha Leading-Edge Medi·Healthcare Cluster (ELEC) that links the Ewha Sinchon Campus, Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital and Seoul Hospital. Kim’s donation is expected to serve as a significant driving force at a critical moment when Ewha is preparing to take a new leap forward, leveraging the opportunities revealed by a new era.
