Ewha Advances Two Ranks in 2021 Annual JoongAng Ilbo University Rankings

Ewha advanced two ranks to the sixth place in the comprehensive evaluation of the Annual JoongAng Ilbo University Rankings, which has finally resumed after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The evaluation was conducted on 44 universities with at least four of the following major tracks: the humanities, social science, engineering, natural science, medicine, and art and sports. Its findings showed that schools that have actively made investments despite the difficult times developed higher competitiveness, suggesting that change and innovation will become main drivers behind the future of universities.

With the unprecedented global event of the COVID-19 pandemic that began in 2020, Ewha has focused on creating a safe environment on its campus by taking proactive responses including visitor access control, remote classes, and improving the education environment through enhanced contact-free education infrastructure and better IT conditions such as launching an online learning space, building self-learning studios, and upgrading classrooms with cutting-edge technologies. In addition, members of the Ewha community both within and outside of the school, including faculty, alumnae, and donors, raised a fund of 400 million KRW to alleviate the hardships facing students due to COVID-19.

Such efforts led to outstanding achievements for Ewha, such as taking the first place among Korean universities for two consecutive years in the gender equality category of the “THE World University Rankings” and the second place among Korean private universities in the 2020 National Customer Satisfaction Index (NCSI) Survey as well as rising in the 2021 Annual JoongAng Ilbo University Rankings.

Ewha was ranked sixth in the category of “faculty research,” first in “citation count per paper of humanities and social science in Korea,” sixth in “research fund from the university per professor,” third in the category of “drop-out rates” with higher rankings meaning lower rates, fourth place in the same category for foreign students, fifth in “pure employment rate”, and ninth in the “retained employment rates,” signifying Ewha’s high achievements across various indicators.

Particularly, both this year’s comprehensive and major-track evaluations confirmed Ewha’s outstanding education and research in the humanities and social science. In the category of faculty research under the comprehensive evaluation, Ewha ranked first in “the citation count per humanities and social science paper” in Korea, fifth in the humanities and sixth in social science on major-track evaluations.

Based on such outstanding achievements, Ewha will begin fully implementing projects to realize the five objectives of “Ewha Vision 2030+,” such as launching the Frontier 10-10 Project to advance as a research-oriented university, establishing the Headquarters for R&D General Planning, developing the new Ewha-style education model, and establishing special graduate schools in cutting-edge academic fields under the vision of “A Creative and Innovative Platform Leading to a Sustainable Society.”
