President Eun Mee Kim Honored with Chang-Lin Tien Distinguished Leadership Award in the United States

President Eun Mee Kimwon the Chang-Lin Tien Distinguished Leadership Award by the Asia Foundation in San Francisco, United States on Tuesday, November 9 in local time.

The Asia Foundation, a non-profit international development organization, is committed to improving lives all across Asia and headquartered in San Francisco, United States. Since its foundation in 1954, the Asia Foundation has addressed five overarching goals—strengthening governance, expanding economic opportunity, increasing environmental resilience, promoting international cooperation, and empowering women. The foundation has annually presented the Chang-Lin Tien Distinguished Leadership Award to a global leader who has made significant contributions to the prosperity and peace of the Asia-Pacific region through outstanding achievements and leadership.

The award was established to honor the legacy of the late Dr. Chang-Lin Tien, an Asian immigrant who served as Chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley and former chair of the Asia Foundation’s Board of Trustees, and made notable accomplishments in various areas including science, higher education, and U.S.-Asia relations. The award has been previously presented to former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon (2018), former President Dr. Oyun Sanjaasuren of the United Nations Environment Assembly (2019), and Chairman Emeritus Ratan Tata of the Indian conglomerate Tata Group (2020). Alongside President Eun Mee Kim, this year’s recipients also included cellist Yo-Yo Ma (President’s Leadership Award) and the Rockefeller Foundation (Philanthropic Leadership Award).

The Asia Foundation praised President Kim’s contributions as a role model for many through her leadership and commitment toward making South Korea and Asia a better place. In particular, she has been selected as the recipient of the Chang-Lin Tien Distinguished Leadership Award in recognition of her outstanding achievements in the empowerment of women and girls, and her distinguished contributions to international development cooperation and academia based on her academic leadership.

“In the 1950s, the Asia Foundation’s support for poverty-stricken Korea represented a lifeline, basic dignity, and common prosperity. In this regard, I am immensely grateful to the foundation for its recognition and I would like to honor and pay my respects to the legacy of Dr. Chang Lin Tien,” remarked President Eun Mee Kim at the award ceremony. “Thanks to my education and training in both Korea and the United States, I’ve been able to study the way in which cooperative efforts for international development can help other countries, and because Ewha Womans University and Korea also once was benefited from the warmth of helping hands from faraway countries, I dedicated my academic career toward creating education and health opportunities for women and girls.” She also added, “Now that I am honored and privileged to serve as the president of my alma mater in leading one of the most comprehensive research universities in the world and a women’s university that is truly one of a kind. Going forward, I hope to be able to live up to the reputation of the Chang Lin Tien Distinguished Leadership Award and the Asia Foundation”
