Special Lecture Invites Former Secretary Janet Napolitano, the First Female U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security
Ewha Graduate School of International Studies (Ewha GSIS) and the Pacific Century Institute (PCI) co-hosted the William J. Perry Lecture at the Lee San-bong Hall of the ECC building on Tuesday, November 26.
The William J. Perry Lecture Series was founded in 2016 and named after American foreign policy veteran William J. Perry, who served as the Secretary of Defense (1994-1997) and North Korea policy advisor (1998-2000) in the Clinton administration. Intended to provide insight for the peace and prosperity of the Korean Peninsula, the lectures had been suspended due to COVID-19 but resumed this year at Ewha thanks to the cooperative relationship between Ewha and the PCI, a U.S.-based non-profit organization.
The event was arranged as part of the Distinguished Global Lecture Series (DGLS) of Ewha GSIS, which a series of invitational lectures has been presented by global leaders, and commenced with opening remarks by Dean Brendan Howe of Ewha Graduate School of International Studies and welcoming remarks and an introduction of speakers by President Eun Mee Kim .
“This special lecture was held thanks to Ewha’s cooperative relationship with the PCI, which has contributed to peace on the Korean Peninsula and prosperity in East Asia. The lecture is expected to provide a meaningful opportunity to share the challenges and experiences faced by Janet Napolitano, the former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, former President of the University of California System, and former Governor of Arizona, and to reflect on proactive female leadership,” remarked President Eun Mee Kim.
Former Secretary Janet Napolitano was appointed as the first female Attorney General of Arizona in 1999, the governor of Arizona from 2003 to 2009, the first Homeland Security Secretary with the inauguration of the Obama administration in 2009, as well as the first female secretary in the history of the Department of Homeland Security. In 2013, she also served as the first female president of the University of California System and made the Forbes list of the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women.
In the special lecture titled “Preparing to Lead: Today’s Challenges for Tomorrow’s Leaders,” former Secretary Janet Napolitano shared her various experiences during her service as the Attorney General and Governor of Arizona and the Secretary of Homeland Security, conveying the personal message of “Dream big” to future women leaders and added “You can do anything you set your mind to. Listen to yourself and what you want, find your passion.”
Following the lecture, Invited Professor Sohn Jie-ae, a board member of the PCI, moderated the follow-up conversation, discussion and Q&A session with students. Through the William J. Perry Lecture Series, which honors Dr. Perry’s legacy of creating a blueprint for denuclearization and peace-building on the Korean Peninsula, Ewha will continue to offer opportunities to share expertise and insight for future woman leaders based on Ewha’s special cooperative relationship with the PCI, which has contributed to deepening education, communication, and research across the Pacific Rim.
